Murcia is a regional capital city with a history dating back thousands of years. Throughout the centuries the different cultures that settled in the city learned to live together peacefully within a harmonious and tolerant climate. It is a city of contrasts with Arab roots and a Baroque style yet with modern and carefully designed urban features.
It is also an entrepreneurial, dynamic and young city with a pronounced cultural ambience which revolves around the municipal facilities and the two universities which have more than 40,000 students between them. Murcia also has a strong commercial character, which has been recently reinforced with the emergence of new business and leisure areas, making it an important services centre in the south east of Spain with supra-regional scope.
However, Murcia is still a city which is tailor-made to the individual and a tourist destination which makes its visitors feel at home. The people of Murcia are open, hospitable and most of all they are renowned for their generosity.
As the city has an interesting historical and artistic heritage, there is a long list of places which must be visited. This includes the Cathedral, the Baroque churches of La Merced, San Juan de Dios, San Nicolás or San Miguel, the Casino, the Episcopal Palace, the Salzillo Museum or the Shrine of the Virgin of Fuensanta, the patron saint of the city.
The people of Murcia are proud of our land and it would be a pleasure to enjoy your company during your visit to the social affairs forum of Eurocities. I sincerely hope that your busy agenda will allow you to see and enjoy this city which will certainly not disappoint you.
We would like to extend a very warm welcome to you and wish you a productive and pleasant stay in Murcia.
